KLF feat. Tammy Wynette – Justified & Ancient (Stand by the JAMs) (1991)
The early nineties produced some ace anomaly (but not novelty) pop hits – brilliant, commercially-massive songs which revoked all conventional wisdom vis-a-vis the themes that sell records (i.e. sex, love, heartbreak, relationships) and instead drew their inspiration from the universe, and other worlds. Tasmin Archer’s Sleeping Satellites is a gorgeous, enduring example of this – it being a 1992 chart-topper which was more concerned with the environmental fall-out of premature space travel than than it was with affairs of the heart. And before it came this piece of interstellar pop mayhem from the KLF, helmed by a respendent Tammy Wynette, in a song (and a career) that was flamboyantly obsessed not with love or sex, but rather with the Lost Continent of Mu.
