The Delgados – Everything Goes Around The Water (1998)
Here’s a masochistic notion for you: imagine the Delgados had never formed. If you scrub the beloved Hamilton four-piece and their Chemikal Underground label from our pop lineage, the independent music map is suddenly rendered horribly barren: no mid-nineties, career-defining releases from Mogwai, Bis and Arab Strap; no brand new (and equally critical) records from RM Hubbert, Found and The Phantom Band. No Burns Unit; no Lord Cut Glass; no solo Emma Pollock or Chem 19. No Everything Goes Around The Water; no flute hook to die for. No, it just does not bear thinking about.
